Valentoon Week: Jughead's Girl (1968)

From The Archie Show:

A compilation of two episodes that didn't originally air together, or so it'd seem:

"The Old Sea Dog": Jughead gets the gang together for a movie, but Reggie hogs the spotlight.

"Jughead's Girl": Jug falls in love, and it's not with anyone we know! Unfortunately, this was a 1-off.

Edit: As you can tell, we'd changed the video after the original copy of "Jughead's Girl" was deleted.

I can't honestly say I've seen this one, as I was never really a big fan of Archie. No rating. Judge this one for yourselves, pilgrims.

Interesting post and an interesting subject.

While I'm not old enough to remember the Archie Show in its original run, I have gotten to see the show in reruns on the old Odyssey Channel(now Hallmark Channel) as well as Retro Television Network when our house had a digital cable system that offered the channel(which in my neck of the woods is operated by the local CBS affiliate).

Like the Sabrina The Teenage Witch cartoon from Filmation, I wasn't sure what to make of Archie the first time I saw the show in reruns, but after a while I actually warmed up to it, and now along with Scooby Doo it's one of my favorite classic series.

As for the cartoon episode itself mentioned, I think I remember catching this episode on RTV a few years ago. Not a bad episode, and definitely kind of a unique twist for a character that's usually not involved in romance that often.

Judging from the screencap, it looks like the girl that Jughead was introduced to had a dog... kind of a parallell to Shaggy and Scooby don't you think?

Jughead's always wanting hamburgers, and he has a dog for a best friend, while Shaggy and Scooby are always hungry(and cowardly) and are best friends.

I know some people would disagree, but I wouldn't mind Jughead having a girlfriend... but maybe not Big Ethel. Maybe someone along the lines of Crystal from Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders; someone who has something in common with Jughead, and someone who he could get along nicely with as well.

It's kind of the same thing with Scooby Doo. I don't mind Shaggy having a girlfriend either; I don't mind it even being Velma(just as long as it's not the SDMI version; although the SDMI series I don't really find that bad).

Although I guess that's my opinion and I'm probably in the minority in what I said.

Well, it's like Betty said in the intro. Jug & Hot Dog had both been bitten by the love bug. It's just too bad this was a 1-shot.

To see how things might've happened as the characters grow older, check out the magazine-size Life With Archie, written by DC vet Paul Kupperberg. Two alternate futures, one each with Archie married to either Betty or Veronica (and Reggie getting the other). No sign of Sabrina in this version----yet. Hmmmm.......

Anyway, Since Jug and the rest of the gang were well established well before Scooby came along, it's just a coincidence that we had another boy & his dog team on the same network......

BTW, Scoobyfan, check out what I've been conjuring over at the Story Board at ToonZone. Prepare to get blown away again.

@Hobbyfan: Indeed.

Not only is it a funny coincidence, but it's even funnier that Shaggy and Scooby debuted on CBS(along with the rest of the gang) in 1969, one year after Archie made his Saturday morning debut on CBS.

I've gotten to see what you've been working on at ToonZone, and I totally agree. Great job as always :)

I've got plans for a Scooby-Archie team-up down the line that'll also involve Josie & the Pussycats, a cross-over that CBS passed on because there were two studios involved back in 1970 (Filmation & Hanna-Barbera). Watch for it, as I'll start on it before Halloween.
